Following a lesson on striking a ball with our insteps and laces, I like to introduce soccer hot spots with hula hoops. It’s a game that allows for several repetitions focusing on accuracy and touch. Above all, it incorporates a class challenge that is fun for all levels.
Setup:
Spread your stash of hula hoops throughout the center of the gymnasium.
Organized students into pairs.
Each pair has one soccer ball and begins on the perimeter of the gym.
The instructor has a stopwatch to record the time it takes to clear the all the hoops.
The goal of the game is for the class to clear the hoops from the floor as quickly as possible.
How to play:
One student at a time from each pair strikes the soccer ball with either their laces or instep trying to get the ball to stop inside a hoop.
If a ball stops inside a hoop, the student takes the hoop back to their base and gives the ball to their partner who repeats the process.
If a ball stops outside the hoops, no hoop is taken.
When the last hoop is removed from the floor, stop the stopwatch and report the time.
Play a second round with goal of beating the first time.
What else?
Remind students as one partner is kicking the other MUST stay at their base. Only one partner can be on the floor at a time.
Be on the lookout for students who continue to use the tip of their foot while striking the ball.
Emphasize that it is a WHOLE class challenge, not a contest to see which pair can earn the most hoops.
Sometimes soccer balls will collide or students may accidentally block a ball as they are retrieving theirs. Accidents happen.
